Fatality on I-385
A Greer man, who was a College of Charleston student on his way home, was struck and killed this morning on I-385 in Laurens County.
Authorities identified the victim as Jacob Robert Oaks, 19, of Greer. He died about 1:08 am after he stopped on the interstate apparently to assist a stranded motorist. The 2007 Toyota Tundra that Oaks was driving was struck by another vehicle. The first vehicle at the scene, a 2006 Ford truck, also was struck but the driver was not injured, a report said.
Oaks was trapped inside his vehicle.
A third vehicle at the scene was a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Gerald McCarson, 54, of Clinton. He was taken to a Greenville hospital.
The wreck happened at mile marker 18 just north of Gray Court about 1 am today, a report said. The SC Highway Patrol’s MAIT team investigated the three-vehicle wreck.
