3 PC HONORS: Blue Hose Women’s Tennis Sweeps Big South Weekly Honors

The Presbyterian College women’s tennis team took home both of the weekly Big South honors this week, as Beth Taylor was named the league’s Player of the Week and Samantha Calais was tabbed as the league’s Freshman of the Week.

Taylor went 3-0 overall last week, going 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, as the PC defeated USC Upstate and Lee University. The sophomore continued her strong play at USC Upstate with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and a 7-5 with Brittany Nuttall at No. 3 doubles. The native of Rainhill, England then recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 against Lee University to remain unbeaten in singles play at 4-0.

Calais recorded a W in both singles and doubles at USC Upstate in PC’s 5-2 win over the Spartans. The rookie went 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and 6-4 with Demi Henschel at No. 2 doubles in just her third collegiate match.

Taylor earns her first Player of the Week honor after being named Freshman of the Week twice last season. She is just the fifth different player in PC history to earn the Big South’s top weekly award. Calais earns her first Freshman of the Week award.

Stenger Named Big South Freshman of the Week

Presbyterian College men’s tennis freshman Daniel Stenger was named Big South Freshman of the Week for his performance last week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

It is the first such honor for the rookie and the second weekly honor for PC this season.

Stenger went 3-0 in singles action against USC Upstate, Appalachian State and Lee, as the Blue Hose recorded wins in all three matches en route to a flawless week. The rookie opened the week with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 at USC Upstate on Wednesday. He followed it up with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5 against Appalachian State on Saturday morning, clinching the 4-3 victory for the Blue Hose.

Stenger capped it off on Saturday afternoon, managing wins in both singles and doubles against Lee University. The native of Mexico City, Mexico paired up with Jaime Castillo-Lopez for a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. He then won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles in PC’s 6-1 victory over the Flames.

Stenger is the first PC player to earn a Big South Freshman of the Week honor since teammate Castillo-Lopez took the honor on February 15 last season.
